The other day I felt like experimenting with a smoothie ingredient that was brand new for me ~ kefir.
I've used greek yogurt quite a bit in the past and I love the extra boost of protein and bone-healthy vitamin K2 that it provides. But my community on YouTube has been asking for smoothies made with another fermented dairy product - kefir.
My initial thought was to use kefir as the liquid base to a smoothie... this was a terrible idea.
It came out really thick, flavorless and just... bleh. 10/10 don't recommend.
But interestingly, when I combined kefir with water, the smoothie came out silky smooth and enhanced the flavors of the other ingredients.
Not to mention, kefir also has many of the same health perks as greek yogurt, so it's a win win!
A recent 2021 review found that dairy products even have anti-inflammatory actions.(1) With this in mind, I wanted to create a smoothie that built on the studied anti-inflammatory perks of kefir with the additional anti-inflammatory perks of turmeric and ginger.(2) Not to mention, turmeric has also been studied to aid in phase 2 liver detoxification, making this combo a great option to sip on if you feel like you need to re-set.(3)
In fact, the vasty majority of the ingredients in today's smoothie were designed with the 7 Day Detox program in mind.
This smoothie is light, refreshing, yet surprisingly satiating. The combination of my zero sugar protein powder with the additional protein in kefir helps to keep you satisfied for multiple hours.
