You can't go to the gym without seeing at least a few cans of Bang Energy Drinks all over the place. This energy drink has gained massive popularity, especially within the YouTube space and gym culture. But if you're following Intermittent Fasting, will Bang Energy Drinks break a fast?
Let's dive into it.
Do Bang Energy Drinks Break a Fast?
One of the main goals with Intermittent Fasting is to reduce the insulin response in order to tap into fat burning mechanisms.
The food sources that spike insulin (and therefore break this type of Intermittent Fast) include protein and carbohydrates. As a good rule of thumb in the Complete Intermittent Fasting Bundle, I typically recommend staying under one gram total of protein and carbs. Exactly how many grams of protein or carbs that will cause an insulin response is variable from person to person. However, aiming for the "One Gram Rule" is a safe option.
So do Bang Energy Drinks break a fast? Bang Energy Drinks contain zero grams of carbs, zero grams of protein and zero calories. It also contains sucralose which is made from regular sugar that has had some of it's hydrogen-oxygen bonds replaced by chlorine, rendering it "calorie-free". So when we're looking at the "One Gram Rule", Bang Energy Drinks do not break a fast.
However, from a nutrition perspective, the extremely high level of caffeine (about 300mg per serving) can be a concern. Caffeine won't break a fast, but high levels of caffeine can lead to energy crashes later in the day that cause you to reach for fast sources of energy - either more caffeine or sugary treats. As a rule of thumb, I always recommend opting for natural (and lower) sources of caffeine from coffee or tea. Bonus: these items don't break a fast either!
