Is Coffee Bad For You?

Updated: May 27, 2020

Coffee is rich in antioxidants and is deemed a superfood in many cultures. Studies have found it to aid in weight loss, decrease your risk of Type 2 Diabetes, improve mood, increase mental alertness, and boost athletic performance. Not to mention that most Americans get the majority of their beneficial antioxidant intake from their daily cup of joe each day. But then what about the flip side? What about the talks of coffee being linked to heart disease, stress, and boosted levels of anxiety? It turns out that it's not the coffee that is causing the negative side effects... rather something else.

Meet mold toxins ~

You may already be familiar with mold around the house or in public space, especially if you like in a humid environment. Think about those dark spots on walls where there has been water damage or your lemons that were left out for a little too long and now are growing a green fuzzy sweater. These are common types of molds that can have some serious hazards if ingested or breathed in. The reason why is because mold produces neurotoxins that can have very serious side effects. Some of them include anxiety, mood swings, and jittery feelings. Sounds a lot like what you may associate with caffeine, right?

The way that coffee is stored in most processing areas causes mold to grow on the beans. In fact, one study found that over 90% of coffee beans are contaminated with mold! This mold produces neurotoxins that then stays in the beans and gets brewed into your coffee. Cue jittery, anxious feelings after having your morning latte.

Does that mean I have to nix my morning coffee?

No way! Like I mentioned, coffee is packed with some major anti-aging benefits - and it tastes SO.GOOD. I did a ton of research and finally found an amazing coffee brand that lab-tests every single batch of coffee beans to ensure that there aren't any mold toxins or mold. It's called Purity Coffee - you can check it out HERE. I drink it every morning with 1 Tbsp. organic unrefined coconut oil, 1 Tbsp. grass-fed butter, and 1 scoop collagen protein. It's smooth, delicious, and completely clean!

My story with mold ~

Mold can effect more than just your mood. In 2006, I was exposed to a different type of mold (not one through my coffee). There was water damage on the side of my house next to my bed that I wasn't aware of and it started to grow black mold. Suddenly, I came down with a 104 fever for 5 days, I wasn't able to eat any food for 3 weeks, lost 20 pounds, was so weak that I couldn't stand without assistance, and lost half of my hair. I had to go through a strict regimen to rid myself of the mold and gain back my muscle, weight, hair, and energy levels. Because of my previous mold exposure, I'm extremely sensitive to mold. Realizing that coffee contains mold and switching to a lab-tested coffee instead helped me decrease those anxious feelings that plagued me ever since my black mold exposure.
