What Can I Drink During Intermittent Fasting? [And Still See Results]

Updated: May 27, 2020

Intermittent Fasting is a deceivingly simple strategy. At first glance, it appears easy and straightforward... but if you dive in without any real direction or science, then you start coming up with a TON of questions - including "what can I DRINK during Intermittent Fasting?!".

One of the main goals with Intermittent Fasting is to stabilize your blood glucose levels, decrease insulin and boost fat burning mechanisms. This physiological combo can result in fat loss, improved energy levels, mental clarity and decreased bloating.

Keep in mind, there are other reasons why you may be incorporating a fasting period such as for religious purposes. If that is the case, any type of food or liquid may break your fast, depending on what type of fast you're incorporating.

If you're looking to improve your overall health, de-bloat and lose fat, then check out the drinks below to add into your fasting period and still see results!

What Can I Drink During Intermittent Fasting?

Water

This should be priority number one. It's easy to become dehydrated during your fasted state because you aren't taking in any water from food. Before you have coffee/tea, make sure to get your water in first. A very small slice of lemon added to your water likely isn't enough carbohydrates to break your fast, but avoid adding in a large squeeze of lemon as this amount will break your fast.

You may even want to add a pinch of Celtic Sea Salt (which also won't break your fast) for minerals and electrolytes. This will also help to prevent headaches that can result from Intermittent Fasting. Check out the video below for all the science-y deets!

Keto Coffee

Is a morning even a morning without a cup of Keto Coffee? 🤔 This incredible gut healing cup of Joe and staple in The Complete Intermittent Fasting Bundle consists of medium chain triglycerides for a steady source of energy and butyric acid to tame inflammation in the gut. It also helps to steady the release of caffeine into your system so you don't get a jolt and crash if you're sensitive to caffeine.

Black Coffee

Want to keep it simple? Black coffee can do the trick! Coffee in general during your fasted state can also help to boost fat burning mechanisms that are already present from Intermittent Fasting. It's important to consider the quality of the coffee that you're using. I recommend only using mold-free and organic coffee so that you aren't exposed to mold-toxins that can spike anxiety. For that reason, I only use Purity Coffee. You can get 10% off your orders with Purity Coffee using the code "autumn" at checkout!*

Just make sure that you don't add any artificial or caloric sweeteners to your coffee as this will disrupt beneficial gut bacteria and break your fast, respectively.

...but what about stevia? Does that break your fast? Find out HERE.

Tea

Herbal, green, black, matcha - whatever is your cup of tea (see what I did there?), you can sip on this during your fasting period. Tea is an amazing source of antioxidants that can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. Green tea is a particularly amazing source of a compound called l-theanine. L-theanine has been found to be helpful at reducing the stress effect for those suffering from anxiety and depression.

Same as black coffee, make sure not to add any sweeteners if you're using this during your fasting period. Want to jazz up your tea a bit? Try making it into a "keto" tea! Check out my Instagram highlights for how to turn your regular matcha into a Keto Matcha HERE.

Sparkling Water

Sparkling water, without any artificial flavors, sweeteners or extra ingredients, will not break your fast. So if you're looking to spice up your normal water routine, try a glass of sparkling water. Keep in mind, some people may experience increased bloating as a result of the bubbles in the water. Limit your intake of sparkling water if you are looking to reduce overall bloating.
