5 BEST Low Carb Breads For Weight Loss [According to a Nutritionist]

Like most people, I love bread. But traditional wheat bread is very high glycemic and doesn't typically support a weight loss or wellness goal. And to top it off, a lot of "low carb breads" are actually pretty junky and not supportive of wellness goals either. So today, I'm sharing my top 5 low carb breads for weight loss that I personally either use or recommend as a Nutritionist.

Outeraisle Cauliflower or Broccoli Sandwich Thins

There are a couple of great cauliflower "thins" companies, but Outeraisle is my favorite. It's made from cauliflower, parmesan and eggs - that's it. It's naturally low in carbs and high in protein. In fact, each serving typically has a full 10 grams of complete protein! I like to use Outeraisle for sandwiches, wraps or to make pizzas.

But watch out for sneaky "cauliflower breads" that aren't actually low carb at all. Often times cauliflower or broccoli "breads" will sneak in cassava flour, tapioca starch or potato starch as one of the main ingredients to give it a more bread-y consistency. These added starches are very high glycemic - often even higher than traditional wheat flour - and won't support a weight loss goal. When choosing a cauliflower bread, check to make sure it only contains cauliflower/broccoli, egg, cheese and seasonings.

Julian Bakery Paleo or Keto Thins

There aren't many low carb breads that actually look like bread without also being loaded with questionable ingredients like wheat protein and canola oil. I like that Julian Bakery Paleo or Keto Thins uses real food ingredients like almond flour and cream cheese. Each serving has 1 net gram of carbs and has the look and feel closer to traditional "bread".

Egg Wraps

If you're a fan of wraps and find it hard to hit your daily protein needs, using an egg wrap could be a great solution for you. Egg wraps, like the brand Egg Life, are made from egg whites and that's about it. Each wrap has 5 grams of complete protein and zero grams of carbs. You can use it as a wrap for sandwiches or to make homemade high protein quesadillas.

Coconut Wraps

Just like cauliflower wraps, you have to be a bit careful with which coconut wrap brand you choose. Most cauliflower wraps sneak in cassava flour or tapioca starch. I like Nuco's Coconut Wraps that just uses coconut meat, coconut oil and coconut water. If you're having trouble hitting your protein needs, you'll want to test out the cauliflower or egg wrap options instead, as coconut wraps don't contain any protein. If not, these are great options for shelf stable low carb wraps.

Whole Food Options

This is less of a single option and more of a broad category. Whole food options are those that you can either make easily at home or make from simple whole food ingredients. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Flax bread ~ This is a great "bread" alternative that can be made fairly easily at home. You can find my recipe HERE.

  • Bell pepper ~ Just slice it in half and scoop out the seeds for a crunchy sandwich holder.

  • Lettuce wraps ~ Not as durable as the bell pepper option, but great for wrapping up chicken or egg salads!

  • Cabbage leaves ~ This can be used in a similar way as lettuce wraps, but provides much more structure and crunch.

  • Jicama ~ Thinly sliced jicama is a great alternative to corn or wheat tortillas for taco shells.
