This Is Why You Don't Get Hungry With Intermittent Fasting
Updated: May 27
Whenever I have a workshop or talk where I discuss Intermittent Fasting, a get at least one or two people who say "fasting?! I definitely could not do that - I get way too hungry!". And I get that! That's what I used to think too! Today, I'm breaking down why you don't get hungry with Intermittent Fasting and how you can implement it TODAY to reach your wellness and fitness goals!
What hunger means
This may seem fairly obvious, but think about it: what does hunger mean? It means that your body needs energy and/or nutrients. Some nutrients are better equipped at fueling your body for longer amounts of times than others.
Hunger is mostly run by the hormone "ghrelin". Studies show that a high carbohydrate diet causes a higher level of ghrelin, AKA more hunger. That same study found that higher levels of fat in the diet significantly decreases the hunger hormone. Lesson learned here: when your body uses fat for more of your energy vs. carbs, your cravings go down.
P.S. you can read more about the difference between fat burning and carb burning HERE.
Intermittent fasting revs up your fat burning mechanisms
Guess what? Your body already has at least 40,000 calories worth of energy that you can tap into without needing to eat every few hours. Intermittent fasting taps into your fat burning mechanisms and provides energy for your body by pulling from your stored fat energy systems. This results in boosted energy levels as well as natural fat loss. Because your body has energy flowing from your fat burning mechanisms, it doesn't trigger ghrelin to go up. I mean, think about it ~ the main goal of eating food is to provide your body nutrients and energy. When you tap into your fat burning mechanisms, you're giving your body all of that! Cue no hunger!
Intermittent Fasting is NOT Calorie Restriction
This is very important and something to remember! A lot of people will do Intermittent Fasting incorrectly by pairing it with calorie restriction. PLEASE don't do this! If you don't eat until you are fully satiated while also utilizing intermittent fasting, your body will think it's starving and slow down your metabolism. I want you to eat until you are completely satisfied to keep your body THRIVING, not STARVING! And YES ~ you will still achieve your weight loss goals with this method due to the fat burning mechanisms!
Make sure you do Intermittent Fasting the RIGHT way!
