Does Diet Coke break a fast? Today, we're diving into the details of Diet Coke and whether or not you can use it during your Intermittent Fast.
Does Diet Coke Break a Fast?
Diet Coke contains zero sugar and zero calories. Because of this technically speaking, it will not break a fast. However, if your goal with Intermittent Fasting is to lose weight, sipping on Diet Coke might not actually be working for your goals.

Artificial sweeteners, such as those used in Diet Coke, have been linked to glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.(1) The more insulin resistant you are, the harder it is to tap into a state of fat burning and achieve a weight loss goal. Not to mention, increased glucose intolerance and insulin resistance are some of the initial hallmark signs of Type 2 Diabetes.
Scientists have also found that these artificial sweeteners may actually increase hunger (particularly sugar cravings) for some people later in the day.(2) These increased sugar cravings can make it more difficult to bypass sugary treats later in the day that would normally work against your weight loss goals.
The same link to increased insulin resistance hasn't been found with other non-nutritive sweeteners, such as stevia or monk fruit.(3) So if you are looking to transition away from diet soda, but need something to replace it for the time being, you can check out monk fruit or stevia sweetened sodas as a better alternative.
